Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority

India is increasing its alcoholic beverage exports one bold step at a time, with a strategic push from the Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority. The arm of the government for facilitating agriculture export has announced an ambitious target of USD 1 billion for promoting Indian alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages worldwide over the coming years.

India, ranking 40th in the world for alcoholic beverages exports, is witnessing an increasing demand for its spirits worldwide. According to a recent release by the Commerce Ministry, the country's alcoholic beverage exports were around Rs 2,200 crore-USD 325 million-in 2023-24. The UAE, Singapore, Angola, Kenya, and the Netherlands are some of the major export destinations.

APEDA, under the 'Make in India' initiative, has taken to going all out for increasing these numbers into sizeable foreign markets. The plan of action includes showcasing Indian spirits in international events and providing better access to markets through APEDA Registration, which helps in gaining better acceptance with the global market players to meet the required global standards for entry into reputed markets worldwide.

The first reported case of this expansion was the recent international release of Godawan Single Malt Whisky. For the first time, artisanal whisky manufactured in Rajasthan has made its foray into the United Kingdom with the first consignment flagged off to British shores. Godawan was present at the International Food and Drinks Event, London, in March 2024 under the aegis of APEDA, which is a significant step towards global promotion. This was not only a quality showcase of Godawan but also paved the way to export it into the UK.

More than a mere commercial launch, the Godawan Single Malt Whisky launch contributes to the local economy. Local six-row barley sourced from the Alwar region benefits the farmers directly and improves their agricultural income.

APEDA's engagement in this initiative reflects the commitment of the authority towards the cause of promoting the beverage industry in India by enhancing its export potential and encouraging sustainable agriculture practices. In light of growing global interest in Indian spirits, APEDA's strategic efforts are foreseen to bolster India's standing in the global alcoholic beverages market.
