For the purpose of this standard, the definition given in IS 1956 (Part 4) and the following shall apply.

• Black Sheet: This is a hot-rolled steel sheet before pickling.
• Cold Rolled Sheet or Coil: This means the cold rolled sheet or coil before galvanizing.
• Thickness of Sheet: This is the hot-rolled or cold-rolled sheet. It is measured either in cut length or coil form in terms of thickness.
• Normal Spangle (N): This finish is achieved through the normal, natural solidification process of the zinc coating. Spangles of different sizes occur; in this finish, it does not affect the coating performance.
• Minimized Spangle (M): In this finish, the character of solidification is managed. Very few spangles appear and, in many cases, are not visible to the naked eye. Coating surfaces can be specified as a minimized spangle if appearance specifications are not met.
