Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 deals with safety procedures required to manufacture FRUIT & VEGETABLE PRODUCTS or Carbonated Fruit Beverages or Fruit Drinks’.
Fruit drinks or carbonated fruit beverages aredefined as beverages that are prepared from water/carbonated water and fruit juice. These drinks may contain dextrose, sugar, liquid glucose, inverted sugar, oil, peel, and other ingredients appropriate to manufacture healthy drinks.
(i) Fruit content (m/m)
(ii) Total Soluble Solids(m/m) not less than 10 % of total quantity
(a) Lemon or lime juice not less than 5% of total quantity
(b) Other fruits not less than 10% of total quantity
Most recent amendment by FSSAI:
If the fruit juice quantity in a beverage is below 10% but over 5%, (2.5% in case of lime or lemon), it will be considered as a “carbonated beverage with fruit juice”. The Total Soluble Solids or TSS of 10 % will not be applicable.
