Permits Required to Start a Business in India

  • Company registration: To obtain a permit, the business itself must be legally recognized. This process generally involves registering the business as a private limited company, limited liability partnership (LLP), partnership firm or sole proprietorship firm under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA). The Registrar of Companies (ROC) is the authority responsible for company registration. The company has to obtain a certificate of incorporation from the MCA.
  • GST registration: GST registration is required by each and every business which has higher turnover. Businesses or companies dealing in business of goods and service must register for GST and GSTN (Goods and Services Tax Network). To collect GST on behalf of the government, one must have GST registration certificate. 
  • Shop and establishment license: Each and every business, being it big or small much get this license. Shop and establishment license gives surety of acquiescence with labour laws, such as working hours, wage payments, and other employee-related regulations.
  • Trade license: Trade license is required by those businesses and companies which deals in trade work. The products included can be anything which are legally allowed. This license makes sure that the business takes care of health and safety of people.
  • FSSAI license: If a business is into food business like a restaurant, carts, cafes, etc., then they need a license which is known as FSSAI license. This license guarantees that whatever people are eating is safe, healthy and made with good things. 
  • Environmental clearance: Businesses or companies involved in industrial production or activities affecting the environment are required to apply for environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC). This clearance ensures that the business complies with environmental protection laws and regulations.
  • Import export code: This is required by those who are in the business of import and export. This is given by Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). This helps in customs clearance, international trade, and foreign transactions.
