The Indian government has announced its plan to change the importation of laptops and tablets into the country for the year 2025. The plan is intended to ensure that there is an adequate supply of the devices while at the same time pushing local companies to increase production. Imports approval would be valid from January 1 to December 31, 2025. In case the products are in dire need of more stock, the government can allow extra imports and finish the demand without causing a delay in home production.

Gradual change towards local production
From 2025, the government will try to cut imports by 5% every year. This would be done through local manufacturing of laptops and tablets from all brands after some time in the second half of the year. The government and the producers would find a way of managing this change since the review would be done halfway into the year. This review will balance the number of products imported against the number of those made locally.
Government’s approach to import controls
In 2024, though free imports were permissible, permission to import a product was still sought by businesses. This is in light of a policy aimed at monitoring imports and supporting indigenous manufacturing. According to the official, it was "carrot-and-stick" where encouragement to firms was coupled with ensuring they transitioned towards production in India.
Evolving import regulations
India's regulations on importing laptops and tablets have been completely revamped in recent times. Back in August 2023, the government proposed a restriction on imports to support the domestic industry. However, large tech companies were alarmed as this would severely hamper their supply chains, the government then postponed those restrictions and allowed free imports till September 2024. Instead of strict regulation, an 'import management system' was devised under which firms need to register and file import data but still have more flexibility.
Extension of import regulations deadline
Initially, the deadline was September 2024, but now has been extended to December 31, 2024. From January 1, 2025 importers will require fresh clearance for their imports. Details regarding this procedure will soon be released by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). This is meant not only to increase production in the country but also to ensure that India uses technology from a reliable nation for IT hardware.
This new plan aims at strengthening India's tech industry while reducing dependence on foreign countries for important gadgets such as laptops and tablets.
