The demand for mineral water has skyrocketed in recent years. Mineral water, as opposed to conventional potable water, is currently chosen by the general public due to its absolute purity and hygiene. The ever-increasing demand for mineral water upsets the entire supply chain, putting further pressure on the existing plant to increase production. New entrepreneurs are flocking to India to build up mineral water plants in response to the rising demand. This company strategy has the advantage of not requiring large investment and ensuring long-term success for the owner. The article goes through every aspect of setting up a legally feasible mineral water plant in India.

Steps To Start a Mineral Water Mill

Mineral water is made up of water that comes from natural sources such as springs or mountains. It contains a variety of naturally occurring minerals, all of which have a major impact on human health. Now, here are some things to think about while starting a mineral plant:

1. Know the Market Opportunity

Mineral drinking water is, as we all know, an essential human requirement in beverages. And as demand rises, your mineral water firm will have more opportunities and thrive. As a result of the rising demand, the industry will become one of the fastest-growing sectors in the economy.

According to statistics, the mineral water market grew by 162 billion dollars in 2018. The main reason for the increase is that there have been more domestic and international tourists in recent years. These days, not just large-scale industries, but also small-scale firms, are proving to be quite profitable.

2. Certification and License

Whether it's a tiny or large-scale business, each one requires different types of permits and registrations from the government. The certification and permit requirements may differ depending on the state government. So, if you want to know the actual regulations for starting a trustworthy business in a specific state, look into the following:

Firm Registration:- One of the most widely advised ways to start a business in India is to form a private limited company. This sort of business provides restricted responsibility for its stockholders, as well as ownership limits. An LLP is made up of partners who own and operate the company. Directors and stockholders may be different in private limited company registration.

In India, Corpseed, your trusted legal expert, offers a low-cost company registration service. Here's where you can discover how to register your company. We take care of all legal paperwork and comply with all Ministry of Corporate Affairs requirements. You will obtain a Certificate of Incorporation (CoI), as well as your PAN and TAN, once the company registration process has been approved. You can now open a current bank account and start running your business.

ISI Certification:- ISI stands for Indian Standards Institute, which was established to establish standards in order to safeguard the integrity of industrial items and to know their true nature. It is a recognised mark that ensures the quality and safety of industrial and consumer goods. It is a well-known and widely accepted certification mark in India that confirms the quality of an industrial good.

The ISI mark is essential for the certification of items for sale in India, and it is required. The BIS requirements must be met by the required manufacturing company in order to qualify for ISI Certification. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, the product must obtain a certificate in order to provide assurance to the consumer or a third party on the product's safety, quality, and dependability.

When the BIS certification mark, also known as the Standard Mark (ISI Mark), appears on a product, it ensures that it meets the criteria. The maker must self-certify the licenced items after determining compliance with the Norm.

Through its monitoring efforts, the Bureau keeps a close check on the quality of authorised products. Surveillance of the licensee's output is conducted on a regular basis, including surprise inspections and testing of samples collected from the marketplace or the manufacturing premises.

Standard Authority And Food Safety Measurements (FSSAI):- Obtaining Government Licenses / Permits is one of the requirements when registering a company entity. If you work in the food industry as a hawker, itinerant vendor, or temporary stall holder, or if you are involved in the manufacturing, transportation, storage, or distribution of food products in any way other than as a caterer, or if you own a small food business, you must first obtain an FSSAI Registration or License.

Certification of Pollution Control:- Every person who wishes to run or establish an industrial plant or any other project must first get the State Pollution Control Board's (SPCB) Consent to Operate (CTO). To put up an outlet, follow the guidelines outlined in Section 25 of the Water Prevention and Control Act of 1974. Anyone who wishes to run an industrial plant must follow the restrictions outlined in Section 21 of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Act of 1981.

The Test Reports Of Water From An Authorized Laboratory:- In India's food and beverage business, water testing is very important. You must get a water testing report from an FSSAI and +NABL authorised laboratory if you own a business in India's food and beverage industry. Obtaining a water testing certificate/licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards is required as a manufacturer of packaged drinking water plants. The government has enacted these regulations to ensure that safe, pure, and sanitary water is used at every stage of the manufacturing process for the final product of the concerned industry.

Pest Control Certificate:- In India, the pest control industry has a lot of space for growth. In India, the pest control industry is growing at a rate of more than 15% each year. In India, the pest control sector employs tens of thousands of people, including thousands of specialists. The process of diminishing or eliminating dangerous, harmful, or hazardous insects or other species is known as pest control. The importance of pest management in the horticulture industry cannot be overstated. Everything a gardener does to keep pests away from their plants and clean up after bug outbreaks is referred to as pest management. Pesticides, both chemical and organic, are used, as well as non-chemical alternatives like integrated pest management (IPM).

3. Good area and locality for the mineral plant business (Location)

To start an industry, one must first establish how much room is required. The mineral water plant requires a minimum of 1000 square feet. Furthermore, the space can be divided into sections for machinery, processing, storage, and mineral bottles that have been processed. Choose a location that can readily meet the target market's needs while also providing adequate water and energy. Another important part of establishing a new mineral water plant is choosing a suitable location or plot of land. Separate accommodations should be made for both productions and the office space. Keep the following points in mind when you finalize the location:

  • The optimal placement should be close to a supply of easily available water;
  • It should be close to the market;
  • Ascertain that the location has a constant power supply;
  • Last but not least, the chosen place must be accessible by road.

4. Requirements of the Water Purification Process

Mineral water manufacturing requires raw materials that are easily available from natural sources. Apart from raw materials, other raw materials are needed such as:

  • Reagents
  • Bottles
  • Bottle caps
  • Chemical
  • Cartons

5. Select the Right Machinery

Mineral water processing equipment is available in a wide range of sizes and designs. There are two sorts of machines available: fully automatic and semi-automatic machines. Choose the device that best meets your budget, investment, and packaging needs.

6. Steps of Water Purification

CHLORINE DOSING SYSTEM:- Raw water may contain living microorganisms and organics that are harmful to a membrane, causing fouling and lowering performance. Even water contains ferrous, which can be converted to ferric oxide and settle in the storage tank. For this, we've provided a Hypo chlorite dosing method. In the raw water storage tank, 3-4 ppm sodium hypo chlorite solution is dosed. When this combines with water, hypo chlorite acids are formed, which function as a disinfectant. One HDPE hypo chlorite solution preparation tank and one set of dosing pumps are provided for this purpose. Isolation valves are used in the required suction/discharge pipework in PVC construction. The dosage rate is modified according to the real need, which varies from case to instance.

RAW WATER STORAGE TANK:- or storage of chlorinated water with adequate capacity, one number of raw water is necessary. PVC pipework and isolation valves, as well as a suitable type of level indicator, are installed in the tank.

RAW WATER SUPPLY PUMP:- For providing raw water to the Pressure Sand Filter Unit, a horizontal centrifugal pump made of stainless steel has been installed. Up to the PSF Unit, necessary suction/discharge pipework of stainless steel construction with isolation valves is also provided.

PRESSURE SAND FILTER:- Prior to feeding the R.O. Plant, raw water is filtered in series by filtration units. For the removal of suspended particles and turbidity from raw water, a Pressure Sand Filter Unit is provided. The PSF Unit is a vertical pressure vessel made of stainless steel. It has a bottom collecting system on the inside. On the supporting media of pebbles and gravels, uniform grades of silica quartz sand are charged. Externally, this unit has SS frontal pipework and a Multiport Valve. During the service cycle, water passes through the sand bed in a downward direction, trapping suspended debris and turbid particles. Due to suspended particles, the sand bed becomes clogged over time, resulting in a bigger pressure drop and fewer floe. Backwashing the filter bed is required at this point. When the pressure drop across the sand bed exceeds the prescribed limit (0.5 kg/cm?) or the filtered water quality deteriorates, whichever comes first? Backwashing and rinsing the Sand Bed are part of the regeneration process. To loosen the filtering media bed, backwashing service water is supplied in the opposite direction of the service cycle. As a result, entrapped suspended particles is released, along with effluent water. Backwashing should be done for around 10 to 15 minutes, or until the effluent is clear. Sand Bed Rinsing: To settle down the sand bed, service water is passed in a downward manner. To guarantee that all unclear water is drained down, the effluent water is drained for around 5 minutes.

SMBS DOSING SYSTEM:- Because chlorinated water has the potential to oxidize the membrane, we've included a Sodium MetaBiSulphite dosing device. The dosage is 4-5 mg/liter. This is done in an HDPE chemical preparation tank with an electronics diaphragm-type dosing pump.

ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER:- Natural water may contain varying amounts of color, odor, chlorine, and organics, all of which are undesirable for potable use and must be removed from the water. If raw water is chlorinated for die-infection, the free chlorine supply to the R.O. system must be removed. Chlorine destroys R.O. Membranes because it is a strong oxidizing agent. Chlorine, odour, and colour can be removed from water by passing it through an activated carbon bed, along with odour and colour. Carbon granules with a greater surface area and the ability to absorb organics are used. ACF Unit is a vertical pressure vessel made of FRP. Internally, it has a strainer on the bottom collection system. Externally, the unit is equipped with SS frontal pipework and an MPV. The supporting medium of Coarse and Fine Silex are charged with granular activated carbon. During the service cycle, water flows downward via the Carbon Bed, which eliminates chlorine and odour from the water. The unit is isolated for regeneration when the pressure drop across the Carbon Bed exceeds the required limit of (0.8 kg/cm?) or the quality of the filtered water deteriorates, whichever comes first. Backwashing and rinsing the Carbon Bed are part of the regeneration process. Carbon's life span is limited over time, which can be determined through laboratory testing. For this purpose, the iodine value is particularly crucial. Carbon is usually replenished once a year.

ANTI SCALENT DOSING:- If the quantity of calcium and magnesium salts exceeds their solubility limit, they are likely to precipitate, causing membrane defects and scaling, which leads to poor R.O. system treated water quality. An anti-Scalent (scale inhibitor) dosage device is given to prevent this. A scale inhabitation, such as Perma Care 191 or a comparable chemical, is usually dosed in the feed water. The dosage is 4-5 mg/liter. This is done with an HDPE chemical preparation tank and an electrical diaphragm-style dosing pump.

MICRON CARTRIDGE FILTER:- This Micron Cartridge Filter features a series of filtration options, including 20 microns, 10 microns, 5 microns, 1 micron, 0.45 microns, and 0.2-micron nominal and absolute micron cartridges. This is a Consumable Cartridge that should be replaced after a certain number of days of use. This is for extra safety of your product water as it passes through the following filtration and there are certain risks of particle slippages that can be stopped by the Cartridge. Also, the 1, 0.45, 0.2-micron cartridge filter will take care of bacterial development up to 0.2 microns.

HIGH-PRESSURE PUMP:- The water flow pressure must be increased for the reverse osmosis process to work. R.O. has offered a vertical multistage centrifugal high-pressure pump in stainless steel construction for this purpose. Working pressure of 14-16 kg/cm is required by the system. The high-pressure pump is equipped with stainless-steel discharge pipework and control valves. Instruments such as a High-Pressure Switch, a Pressure Gauge, and re-circulation valves are provided for the system's safe operation.

REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM:- By using the 'Osmosis' principle, the Reverse Osmosis System rejects 97-99% of total dissolved solids. The R.O. Module assembly is installed on M.S. Skid in this system. On the skid is a high-pressure FRP Pressure Vessel that houses spirally-wrapped membrane parts in sequence. The RO System divides the softened water into two streams: Product and Reject water. Water that has been treated and has a lower TDS content is referred to as product water. Reject water is highly concentrated water that should be drained rather than utilized. The feed water is first fed to the first Pressure Vessel, where it is treated, and then collected in the center core tube. Each membrane's treated water is collected in a shared product water storage tank, while the reject is discharged.

PRODUCT WATER STORAGE TANK:- For providing raw water to the Pressure Sand Filter Unit, a horizontal centrifugal pump made of stainless steel has been installed. Up to the PSF Unit, necessary suction/discharge pipework in s.s. construction with isolation valves is also provided.

WATER SUPPLY PUMP:- A stainless steel pump has been installed to feed water to the Mineral Adding System.

ADDED MINERAL SYSTEM:- The TDS value of R.O.Product water is very low, which makes it taste bad. The water becomes bitter, so GIECL provides a Mineral Adding System or a Blending System to improve the taste. The Physical Mineral will be mixed in the Mixing tank by the Stirrer, and the Mineral will be dosed into the R.O.Product water by the Dosing pump before Ozonation using the TDS Controller. TDS can be adjusted using the Blending system by adding filtered water after the ACF has been properly treated.

ABSOLUTE MICRON CARTRIDGE FILTER:- Following the mineral addition, the water is filtered through a 1 & 0.2 micron Absolute Micron cartridge filter, which removes tiny micron contaminants.

ULTRA VIOLET STERILIZER:- Although R.O. treated water is devoid of all microbiological contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, they may reappear in water after lengthy storage. Before filling and sealing the bottle, disinfection of the water is required for reverse osmosis application. As a result, before filling R.O. treated water into pre-cleaned PET Bottles, an online Ultra Violet Sterilizer is given. The disinfected water is routed via a UV system, which comprises UV tubes that emit high-intensity Ultra Violet Rays, killing the germs. This system is made up of an S.S. surface housing with Ultraviolet Lamps installed within. During treatment, the water to be treated surrounds these tubes. A mechanism is in place to generate the high voltage needed for the generation of UV rays.

OZONE GENERATOR:- Even though the R.O. System rejects all micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses, they may reappear in packed bottles over time after passing through the UV system. As a result, prior to bottling filling, R.O. Product water must be disinfected. This is critical for maintaining good Mineral Water Quality in accordance with industry requirements. This Ozone Generator will produce oxygen-rich water, eliminate bacterial growth, and extend the shelf life of your Packed Bottle of water unless it has been opened for a period of time. Also, the Ozonation of water can give your treated water a distinct flavor.

OZONE RE-CIRCULATING TANK:- To achieve the desired ppm of Ozone gas in the finished product water. Water is re-circulated in the ozone re-circulating tank by a needed flow rate pump. Ozone install outlet ozone Pump it suction ozone and use a static mixer to stir it up. For the filling section, this tank is equipped with one re-circulating pump and one product water transfer pump.
