The electricity suppliers, including the generating companies, transmission companies and distribution companies, need to obtain prior permission from the Electrical Inspector before installing any high-voltage power system. They need to apply online for CEIG Approval for a new electricity connection. The electricity connection can be obtained only after the approval of drawings, Inspection by CEIG and receiving the CEIG Approval for Electrical Installation. CEIG is appointed in every state. Their primary goals are to ensure that all electricity installations in the State adhere to the provisions of the Indian Electricity Rules and the Central Electricity Authority Regulations, 2010. This is done with the specific intention of reducing the risks posed by electricity to human beings, animal life, and property.
Who Needs the CEIG Approval?
According to the Central Electricity Authority Regulations, any institution having an electrical connection or apparatus of up to 650 volts needs to follow the safety guidelines as described in the regulations but those who are operating any electrical installation of 650 volts and more need to obtain an approval from the Electrical Inspector. It is granted only after due inspection by the authorities. The Solar Plants having more than 100 KW capacity need to get online CEIG Approval. Captive power Plants of more than 500 KVA and other Power Systems having more than 33 KW load need to be approved by the CEIG.
