The Bureau of Indian Standards recently released major updates regarding certain Indian standards. This notification was issued on January 7, 2025, officially cancelled several varnish-bonded glass-fibre and copper conductor standards. This step is part of the Bureau's relentless efforts to ensure that standards do not become archaic and ineffective in this technological world.

Withdrawn standards

The BIS has withdrawn the five specific standards listed on December 31, 2024. Withdrawn standards imply a shift from the earlier use of outdated practices and materials in electrical engineering and manufacturing. Some of the newly withdrawn standards are as follows:

  • IS 6181: 1971: This is the standard regarding the specification for varnish-bonded glass-fibre braided rectangular copper conductors.
  • IS 9778: 1981: This standard tests the thermal endurance of varnish-bonded glass fibre-covered rectangular copper conductors.
  • IS 11395: 1985: It is a specification for tape-wrapped round copper wires with a temperature index of 220.
  • IS 11597: 1986: This standard concerns polyester tape-wrapped, varnish-bonded glass-fibre-covered rectangular copper conductors.
  • IS 13343: 1992: This standard guides the thermal endurance of enamelled and varnish-bonded glass-covered rectangular copper conductors.

Significance of standards

Standards are very important because they protect people and ensure that goods are also of quality. They also guide manufacturers on what to do and help consumers be confident about the products they buy. In case old standards are cancelled, there are new ones to replace them. These new standards are the latest technological and materials, so products will be even better. With this standard, there is a good assurance that things used daily will always be safe and reliable and do the job at hand. Therefore, it tends to ensure the proper functioning of any industry and satisfies the customers regarding what they gain.

Future developments

These withdrawn standards leave an opportunity for the development of new specifications. BIS would then develop new standards based on current requirements and technological changes in the industry. This approach ensures that India is always in the game by following the best practices of the world.

The Bureau of Indian Standards maintains its commitment to upholding quality standards in harmony with modern technology and consumer safety. Cancellation of these obsolete standards is one of the ways the effectiveness of electrical sector regulations could be enhanced. As new standards are formulated, they will help manufacturers more precisely and also keep consumers' products safer.
